What Is Your Karmic Debt Number?

Karmic debt is one of the most easily misunderstood concepts in Numerology. From the name, it would be easy to assume that your karmic debt is simply the negative debt you've accrued over your current life. In actuality, however, karmic debt is almost the exact opposite. It works like this; everyone on earth has some sort of issue left over from a past life, a problem or weakness that kept their soul from reaching Nirvana, that must be dealt with. The more of these debts that are removed from the soul, the closer you come to reaching Nirvana. Your karmic debt number, therefore, is a simple way of finding out what the most pressing of these issues is. There are two different ways to determine your karmic debt number but, for ease of use, this will focus on the version using your name.

First, you simply write out your full name as it appears on your birth certificate. The name James Marcus Smith will serve as an example of how the system works. Every letter has a number assigned to it from one to nine. A is 1, B is 2, etc., until you reach the letter J. While J would normally be 10, it instead loops back to 1, while K is 2 and so on. This repeats again at S (1) until you reach Z. which is 8, and add those numbers together. So, for the example name, James Marcus Smith, it would be 1+1+4+5+1+4+1+9+3+3+1+1+4+9+2+8=57. You then continue adding until you're left with a one digit number, so 57 would be 5+7=12 and 12 would be 1+2=3. Thus, your karmic debt number would be 3. The exception to this is if you get the numbers 11 or 22. These are referred to as “master numbers” and have their own significance.

Your karmic debt number can now be used to find out what lingering issue is most relevant to getting your soul one step closer to Nirvana. Each number applies to one of 11 key issues that you have left over from your previous life. Once you've found out your issue, you'll know exactly what you need to work on in order to continue cleansing your soul and making yourself ready for Nirvana. Below, you'll find a list of what each number signifies and what steps you should take to remove your karmic debt.

Number 1

If your number is one, then your previous life had a problem with independence. Specifically, you were never able to learn how to be your own person and live your own life. Whether this was through your own fault or that of another is immaterial, the point stands that you need to learn how to be independent. It's possible, even likely, that being dependent on another is still a problem for you in this life, or at least a great temptation, but you need to teach yourself how to get along on your own.

Number 2

The number two shows that you never learned to trust your intuition in your past life. Your intuition and ability to predict what will occur is an extremely valuable skill, but likely one you're struggling with today. You need to start listening to your gut, so to speak, and trusting your instincts. After all, your instincts are guaranteed to have your best interests in mind.

Number 3

A three means that you had a problem with being too frivolous. It's entirely possible that you wasted a previous life refusing to be serious even when the situation called for it. This isn't to say that frivolity is bad, mind you. It simply has a proper time and place. Learn when to be lighthearted and when to be serious and you'll have learned your lesson well.

Number 4

Four indicates that you were supremely lazy in a past life. This is often hinted at before you ever determine your karmic debt number by the feeling that you've had to work twice as hard as you should have to get where you are. Simply keep your nose to the grindstone. Over time, your hard work and diligence will pay off. This karmic debt is one of the most straightforward to pay off and once it is paid, you'll quickly notice life becoming easier for you.

Number 5

The number five indicates one of the more difficult karmic debts to pay off. Essentially, you need to learn that time is limited, and how to spend it wisely, as you wasted your previous life with cheap thrills and sensual pleasures. You may need many years to get a handle of how quickly time flows by but, once you've learned to spend time wisely, you'll find great joy in every well-spent moment.

Number 6

If your karmic debt number is six, you ignored your family duties in your past life. Even today, you may find yourself taking your family and friends for granted. This is a slippery slope, however, and you have to learn to love and cherish your family. They're the ones, after all, who will always stand by you. Learn to appreciate them for that and the rewards will be great.

Number 7

Seven is the skeptic's number. In your previous life, you failed to spiritually develop in any noticeable way. This usually leads to someone being of a supremely skeptical nature when it comes to anything spiritual or supernatural. You need to learn faith, a difficult lesson to be sure, in order to overcome this obstacle.

Number 8

The number eight means that you were very frivolous with money in your previous life. You never learned the value of saving up for emergencies and simply wasted what money you got on needless things. In order to overcome this karmic debt, you'll need to work your hardest to attain financial prosperity. Don't just work endlessly, put money aside, invest it wisely, and prepare for the future.

Number 9

If your karmic debt number is nine, you'll need to work hard to help your fellow man. You'll find it difficult to get very far in life without becoming a true humanitarian. The reason for this is that, in your previous life, you refused to help others and focused on yourself. Because of this, you need to forget about yourself and help others in order to set things right.

Master Number 11

The first master number, 11, indicates that you were too cautious in a previous life. You passed up many good opportunities due to a fear of failure. New opportunities will show themselves to you in this life, however, and you need to reach out and take them. Don't let a lack of confidence keep you from grabbing hold of what could be a perfect chance or you'll fail to pay off your karmic debt completely.

Master Number 22

The last number, 22, is a sign that you failed to properly handle responsibility in a previous life. You'll need to shoulder responsibility in this life, and work hard to use it properly, if you want to complete this next step towards Nirvana. Whether it be responsibility at work, at home, or even amongst friends, you need to do all that you can to see to it that you fulfill any duties placed on your shoulders to the best of your ability.

Determine Your Karmic Debt Number

If you want to determine your karmic number an easier way, it's fairly simple to do. You simply take your date of birth, 12 21 1973 for example, and reduce it just as you did your name. 1+2+2+1+1+9+7+3=23, 2+3=5, which would leave you with a karmic debt number of five. Now that you know how to find your karmic debt number, and what to do once you know it, all that's left is to go out and live your life as well as you can.

  2. I think karmik debt should not be calculated by name number counting. We get our name not by nature. it selects someone in our family after thinking so many names but our date of birth is more scientific because it consist a perfect date, month.year and timing so it is more accurate. this is just my views only one can choose their own option.

  3. I must say… it doesn’t work for me… at all. My karmic number is 7, and by nature I’m not even slightly skeptical. Quite opposite – since I was young I’ve been very spiritual and religious and sensitive, and open to new experiences and different opinions. What I need to learn is not to be so open and prone to other’s opinions.
